Who is eligible to apply for the apprenticeship?
To be eligible for an apprenticeship program, you must be 17 years old at the time of commencement and be a permanent resident or an Australian citizen.
What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?
- A nationally recognised trade certificate in your chosen career field.
- Hands-on training with cutting-edge tools and technology.
- Access to Caterpillar-specific training programs.
- Guidance on career planning and potential pathways for advancement.
- Compensation for your work and learning.
- Potential permanent employment, which comes with a full range of employee benefits.
How do I apply?
You can apply directly through the job listing once it goes live on reputable job sites or through our Careers Page. To stay updated, save a job alert on our Careers Page or follow our social media channels (LinkedIn or Facebook) for news on when applications open.
What should I include in my application?
- A cover letter that shows your interest in WesTrac and the specific trade you'd like to pursue.
- A resume should include your work history with job titles, dates of employment, and responsibilities. It must also contain contact information, such as your mobile number and current address, any relevant work experience, and the contact details of two referees.
What happens after I submit my online application?
- Applications will be screened, and if you are shortlisted, you will receive an online skills test within three weeks of submitting your application.
- If you successfully progress following the online skills test, you will then be invited to an assessment centre at the WesTrac WA Head Office in Guildford, where you will participate in multiple activities. Successful apprentices will be selected from this group.
How long does the recruitment process take?
The recruitment process takes up to three months. For instance, if applications open in June, we expect to make an employment offer to the successful candidate by August.
Does it matter if I haven't had a job before?
No prior employment is required to obtain an apprenticeship. However, relevant work experience or a pre-apprenticeship may strengthen your application.
What are the rosters like, and will I get to go to the site?
Your roster depends on your position and site location. First-year apprentices may work various shifts, including day shift, afternoon shift, or night shift. As a third- or fourth-year apprentice, you may have the opportunity for site rotation based on your training outcomes. Additionally, there are different FIFO roster patterns depending on your location.
Will I be provided with uniforms and tooling?
As an apprentice, you will be provided with all the necessary PPE, including 2 shirts, 2 trousers, 1 polo shirt, and 7 overalls (which will be laundered by WesTrac), along with 1 pair of boots. Additional PPE requirements, such as prescription glasses, can be ordered as needed.
You will receive tooling at a discounted cost upon commencement. Tooling is optional, and if you choose to acquire tooling, a payment arrangement can be established for the duration of your apprenticeship.
What training will I receive during the program?
You will complete your trade training at the WesTrac Institute WA or through an external Registered Training Organisation (RTO), depending on your chosen trade and location. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will also complete essential safety training and obtain any high-risk work licenses required for your role.
Importantly, you will learn on the job alongside experienced technicians, gaining practical, hands-on experience that complements your formal training and prepares you for a successful career.
What happens if I am unsuccessful?
If your application is unsuccessful, you will be officially notified via email or phone call.
