When do applications open, and when does the NSW Apprenticeship Program start?
The NSW Apprenticeship program opens May 11 2027. Sign up for a job alert to be notified when applications open, or follow us on LinkedIn and Facebook for updates.
Successful apprentices for the 2027 intake will commence in December 2026 to complete their induction and safety training. Full-time work in your assigned workshop will begin in January 2027
How do I apply, and how long does the Application-to-Offer process take?
You can apply directly through the job listing once it goes live on reputable job sites or through our Careers Page. To stay updated, save a job alert on our Careers Page or follow our social media channels (LinkedIn or Facebook) for news on when applications open.
The process takes approximately 3-4 months. For example, if applications open in May, successful candidates can expect an offer by August.
Who is eligible to apply for the apprenticeship?
You must be 16 years old at the time of commencement and hold current Australian working rights. We do not provide visa sponsorship.
If you’ve already started an apprenticeship in the same trade, you can still apply—just let us know why you’re looking to make the change.
What should I include in my application?
- A cover letter that shows your interest in WesTrac and the specific trade you'd like to pursue.
- A resume should include your work history with job titles, dates of employment, and responsibilities. It must also contain contact information, such as your direct mobile number and current address, and any relevant work experience.
What happens once I've applied online?
If shortlisted, you’ll receive an online skills test within 2 weeks of applying. You’ll have 7 days to complete it. The test covers basic math, literacy, problem-solving, and logical thinking. Calculators are allowed, and the test must be completed independently.
If successful, you’ll progress to an assessment centre at WesTrac NSW Head Office (Tomago), which includes team activities and problem-solving tasks.
Does it matter if I haven't had a job before?
No. Prior employment isn’t required. Share details about your education, sports, hobbies, or other activities to help us get to know you.
What are the rosters like?
For the first three years, apprentices work day shifts only. Start times vary by location but are typically 5:30am–7:30am, with an 8.5-hour day including a 30-minute meal break. In your fourth year, you may have the option to work night shifts. Various roster patterns are available to suit different lifestyles.
What training will I receive during the program?
You will complete your trade training at the WesTrac Institute NSW or through an external Registered Training Organisation (RTO), depending on your chosen trade and location. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will also complete essential safety training and obtain any high-risk work licenses required for your role.
Importantly, you will learn on the job alongside experienced technicians, gaining practical, hands-on experience that complements your formal training and prepares you for a successful career.
Will I be provided with uniforms and tooling?
- Yes. You’ll receive uniforms, boots, and all required PPE. Overalls are laundered free of charge at all locations.
- Yes. All WesTrac apprentices (except Fitter Machinists in the Machine Shop) are required to participate in the tooling program. Each apprentice will receive a toolbox aligned to their trade upon commencement in December.
- The cost of your toolbox varies by trade, typically between $3,000 and $6,500, with WesTrac contributing $1,500. The remaining amount is repaid over your 4-year apprenticeship via fortnightly payroll deductions
Do you offer trade upgrades or dual trade?
Yes. NSW Plant Mechanic Apprentices can complete an Auto Electrical Apprenticeship after their Plant trade with one extra year of training.
What happens if I am unsuccessful?
You’ll be notified formally via email or phone.
